Humanitarian Design

www.GOOD.IS has posted a clip from The Colbert Report that features Emily Pilloton, the author of Design Revolution... http://www.good.is/post/emily-pilloton-on-colbert.

"Humanitarian design is really about taking design as a creative process, which is really about problem-solving, and putting it to work on some of the biggest social issues that we are facing today," states Emily.

Colbert demonstrates life-saving foot gear designed for military troops to walk in areas with landmines with their weight elevated and evenly distributed to disburse the effects of an explosion. He also wears amazing glasses that... well just go to the link above to see these extremely innovative designs that have an extraordinarily positive impact on specific communities whether they are in remote areas of the world or in a war zone.

GOOD.IS free-lance writer, Alissa Walker, is the moderator for the panel discussion, "How Design and Information Have the Power to Transform Business Solutions" on Thursday, February 5 from 2:30-3:00p. Panelists are Ravi Adapathya, Global Design, GE Healthcare; Kath Straub, Principal, Usability.org; and Laura Guido-Clark, Product Designer, HP Imagineered Workspace.

Marty Neumeier Press Release

Branding and Design Authority Marty Neumeier to Lead Design Thinking Workshop at Ringling College Sarasota International Design Summit

Internationally acclaimed author and visionary leader of The Liquid Agency to explore processes essential for business competitiveness today

Sarasota, Fla. (January 20, 2010) – His bestselling books have been published in 20 languages and his agency hailed as “revolutionary” by BusinessWeek Magazine. On February 6, Marty Neumeier, director of transformation for the San Jose, CA-based The Liquid Agency, will show attendees of the 4th annual Ringling College Sarasota International Design Summit how some of the world’s most innovative brands have clobbered the competition by implementing design thinking in their organizations.

“For years, Marty Neumeier’s transformational thinking and books like The Designful Company have had a profound impact on major brands around the world,” said Dr. Larry R. Thompson, president of Ringling College of Art and Design. “This workshop will offer outstanding case studies and copious takeaways for how to implement design thinking and practice in business the day attendees get back to their offices or classrooms.”

Neumeier’s Design Thinking Workshop will dive deeply into the processes that are essential for companies to transform their brands into names that have lasting impact and resonance with consumers today. Attendees will learn how to innovate by design, cultivate a designers’ skill for understanding the role of the customer experience in the creation of the product or service, and how to increase the effectiveness of decision makers’ choices by giving them more and better options. The workshop is a highlight of the 2010 Ringling College Sarasota International Design Summit, taking place on the Ringling College of Art and Design Campus February 4 – 6, 2010. The event focuses on helping business maintain their competitive edge by leveraging design thinking and practice throughout their organizations.

Neumeier’s bestselling books include The Brand Gap, Zag, and The Designful Company. According to Neumeier, it’s vital to “incite business revolution by unleashing the power of design thinking.” He has developed hundreds of brand identities and architectures for companies such as Apple, Adobe, Netscape, Kodak, and Hewlett-Packard. In 2002 he launched Neutron, a design think tank focused on internal branding, which later merged with The Liquid Agency in San Jose.

But designing kitchens, baths, master suites and great rooms?

Today he is one of the most celebrated interior design personalities on television and the star of his very own design show, Color Splash, on HGTV. But even a few years ago David could not have anticipated his swift rise to fame.

Gaming Technology Guru to Address International Design Summit

Sarasota, Fla. – (Oct. 14, 2008) – Phillip Holt, GM of EA - Tiburon in Orlando, was announced today as the closing keynote speaker of Ringling College of Art and Design’s Sarasota International Design Summit, Oct. 27-29. Holt will speak at lunch on Wednesday, October 29 and will provide a broad overview of the changing face of the games industry and how the biggest developer in the U.S. adapts to changing trends in its core business.

“EA looks at every nature of online communication and where people are spending their time,” Holt said. “Increasingly, social networks like Facebook are becoming important for EA to understand to deal with gamers and leverage the information. It’s a huge industry with more than $10 billion in annual revenue in North America and $30 billion in annual revenue globally.”

EA Tiburon is the second largest studio among Electronic Arts' World Wide Studio facilities. For over a decade EA Tiburon has served as the primary developer of Madden NFL, one of the highest-revenue franchises in gaming history. In addition to Madden, it essentially serves as the guardian of all EA football franchises, as well of other sports series such as Tiger Woods PGA Tour and NASCAR.

“Madden is a game experience that's true to football and authentic to everything that Madden stands for, but it’s open to a casual or a passive fan of football. They want to buy it because of what we deliver,” Holt said. Prior to his position at EA Tiburon, Holt was vice president of product development at THQ. Holt was in charge of that publisher's growing lineup of studio operations.

An Oh-so-cool Fractal Table

As blogged on MoCo Loco,

The Fractal Table is a table developed by Platform Wertel Oberfell and Matthias Bär for Materialise.MGX. It's based on fractal growth patterns - their studies on these patterns show treelike stems growing into smaller branches and getting increasingly dense at the top. Translating this fractal growth into furniture can only be done by way of rapid prototyping.
